Benefits of a workforce that mirrors the community’s diversity

An employment programme, operational since 2008, has helped thousands of jobseekers find their next career move in companies that see the benefit of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Ireland is a multicultural country. So, having a workforce that mirrors the diversity of the population in society is essential as it brings many advantages. For the employer, it leads to greater productivity, innovation and decision-making. For the employee, it instils a sense of belonging, respect and support for all individuals.

Inclusive workplaces boost employee satisfaction

When employees feel included — regardless of their background, race, gender or abilities — they are more likely to experience job satisfaction, engagement and a sense of security. For the wider colleague community, it improves cultural understanding, leading to friendships and enhanced social cohesion and social inclusion. It is a win-win situation for everyone.

Yet, despite employment being the single most important factor in escaping the cycle of poverty and enabling active participation in society, many barriers remain for certain groups. For migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, these include weak professional networks, unrecognised qualifications, poor English language skills, unfamiliarity with the Irish job market and employer biases.

EPIC helped me find a job and so many
other things, too, like how to vote.

Helping unemployed refugees, migrants and asylum seekers

Business in the Community Ireland’s EPIC programme is designed to tackle some of these challenges. It is open to unemployed refugees, migrants and asylum seekers living in Ireland. It increases their chances of finding a job through online training on understanding the Irish job market, individualised in-person career support and partnering with businesses.

One participant shares: “The course covered lots: CVs, cover letters, interviews, understanding the social welfare system, etc. I am extremely happy and grateful. EPIC helped me find a job and so many other things, too, like how to vote. It also helped my self-confidence and integration into the Irish community, which for me, in particular, means a lot. I came to Ireland to stay, build a life, integrate into society and learn more about culture, local habits; and now I truly feel less of an outsider.”

Initiatives like EPIC help people of all backgrounds overcome integration challenges and find fulfilling work in Ireland. Ultimately, this fosters a more diverse, equitable and cohesive society.
